New Grants Awarded

In August 2010, Dr. Acheson received funding for a KL2 career development award to expand his expertise in behavioral and neural mechanisms underlying risks for substance use disorders.

In May 2010, the NRLC was funded by NIDA to conduct a large prospective study of development of impulse control among children and adolescents who are at high risk for problems with substance abuse.

In April 2010, the NRLC was funded by NIAAA to investigate how behavioral impulsivity and response to alcohol and serotonin manipulation can be used to predict capacity to reduce binge drinking over time.

Personnel News and Recognition

  • Dr. Charles Mathias was elected to the International Society for Research on Impulsivity as a Member-at-Large and Web Publisher.
  • Dr. Arielle Sheftall won 1 of only 3 travel awards to the International Society for Research on Child and Adolescent Psychopathology to present her work on Risk and resilience among girls who have attempted suicide.
  • Dr. Nathalie Hill-Kapturczak was appointed as Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
  • Dr. Rene Olvera has been appointed by Governor Rick Perry to the Texas Juvenile Justice Board.
  • Cynthia Cornejo, P.A.-C. was elected to the UTHSCSA Committee for the Advancement of Women and Minorities.
  • Cynthia Cornejo, P.A.-C. was nominated to represent the School of Medicine on the Staff Advisory Counsel.
  • Sarah Farris began pursuing a M.A. in Counseling in the fall of 2010 at the University of Texas San Antonio.

  • Dr. R. Michael Furr was funded as part of the John Templeton Foundations Character Project.
  • Dr. Donald Dougherty was named as the Regents' Research Scholar by the University of Texas system.  This award recognizes an important faculty recruitment and provides financial support for research infrastructure.

  • Dr. Donald Dougherty was recognized for 15 years service to the Univesity of Texas system in 2010.
  • Dr. Charles Mathias was recognized for 5 years service to the Univesity of Texas system in 2010.
  • Dr. Donald Dougherty was invited to serve as a full time member of the NIH Adult Psychopathology and Disorders of Aging Study Section (APDA). His period of service to this study section runs from July 2009 - June 2013.
  • Drs. Dougherty, Mathias, and Dawes were interviewed by the Association for Accreditation of Human Research Protection Program, as part of UTHSCSA's successful research accreditation.
  • Dr. Donald Dougherty was appointed as the Vice President of the International Society for Tryptophan Research.
  • Dr. Donald Dougherty was appointed as a Consulting Editor for the journal Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology.
  • Dr. Donald Dougherty is co-chairing the new Institute for Integration of Medicine and Science Grant Writing with New Investigators series.
