Biographical Sketch
Dr. Acheson is an Assistant Professor with a joint appointment in the Department of Psychiatry and the Research Imaging Center at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA). He completed his graduate training at the University of Buffalo, The State University of New York (SUNY) studying laboratory models of decision-making and impulse control in rodents. He next completed postdoctoral training at the University of Chicago studying laboratory models decision-making and impulse control in humans and then completed additional postdoctoral training in neuroimaging at UTHSCSA studying neural differences in young adults at risk for developing substance use disorders. After joining the UTHSCSA Department of Psychiatry as an Assistant Professor in 2008 and joining the Neurobehavioral Research Laboratory and Clinic (NRLC) team, he completed the UTHCSA KL2 scholar program investigating behavioral and neural mechanism underlying risk for substance use disorders in adolescents.
Throughout his career Dr. Acheson's primary interest has been the examination of the neural substrates of decision-making and impulse control. He is particularly interested in understanding how these substrates function differentially in drug-abusing and other impulsive populations, either as a result of baseline differences or as consequences of drug use or other influences. Currently, Dr. Acheson’s projects include using behavioral measures and neuroimaging techniques to better understand risk and vulnerabilities for developing substance use disorders.
